For this year’s VIAF opening concert, the organising committee has decided to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary of his birth by performing his Symphony no. 9 (Choral). This will be on Wednesday 10th June, at the Teatru Astra in Victoria, Gozo. Beethoven’s 9th, as it is affectionately known, was first introduced to Malta by the late Joseph Vella, VIAF’s co-founder and first Artistic Director. This was way back in 1979, in a concert which had also featured Mro Vella’s beloved Mass in D. Taking part was the Malta Choral Society and an orchestra put together for the occasion under the leadership of Mario Bisazza. Since then, the 9th Symphony was performed a handful of times, and this year it will be a fitting tribute both to Mro Vella’s legacy and to Beethoven’s anniversary.
Soloists Miriam Cauchi (soprano), Marvic Monreal (mezzo soprano), Michael Connaire (tenor), and Sönke Tams-Freier (bass), the Laudate Pueri Choir (dir: George J. Frendo), and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Philip Walsh will be performing in the 10 June concert which starts at 8pm. Entrance is free but booking is recommended due to the high demand for seats. Please send an email to [email protected] or phone 79316804 / 79059704.
